MADURAI IN 2009 - News, Happennings, Potential, Updates, Happennings, Improvements

Sponsored by OruAcre.com

Chennai - the big village is always a village. There is progress in development and growth, but it is not as normal or as expected. The progress is very slow.

Given an example and a pity situation of Chennai -
An article in Hindu dated April 28, 2008 about the New Airport terminal in Chennai that - New airport terminal at Chennai to be ready by next March that is March 2009. Hello!! Today's date is nearing Jan 2010.

Will we achieve improvements in Chennai? What is lagging in Chennai? What is stopping the progress? Isn't there enough funding or resources for the project? Is it because of corruption among officials and contractors?

I am going to cover lot of topics and happenings in this article for Chennai in 2009 including - Health, Society, Business, Politics, IT, BPO, Entertainment - Movies, Passport office, Happennings, Improvements, Changes and Status of people.

Chennai Business:

To begin with - due to market slump across the globe, there is a dip in Chennai businesses especially Information Technology (IT and ITeS) and real estate. Last year (i.e.,2008) in Chennai, there were steep prices of lands and houses. Even agricultural lands in villages around Chennai were very expensive. But, this year 2009, Chennai's real estate has fallen down drastically. Lands prepared as plots are just waiting just like that. Very few buyers, so real estate agents are starving for sales of their lands. Hoping to see some improvements in the coming year 2010.

Chennai Slums:

Speaking about businesses and richness in Chennai, there are still slums in Chennai. Though there are many SHGs and NGOs cropping up, we are not in a situation of completely getting rid of slums and improve. However, there is increasing awareness among people in Chennai slums. Credit goes to NGOs and communication/media technologies like Cell phones and TVs etc.,.

Chennai Politics:

In Political grounds, there had been significant contribution to Tamil Nadu and India. There was Thirumangalam elections in early part of the year and changed tamil nadu politics significantly. It was a sweeping victory for DMK, though it is just a small constituency. It was a prestige issue for DMK in regards to this election and DMK did it. Tirumangalam constituency got benefited to a great extent. In fact, there were many common citizens who spent a lot due to a "stimulus" money contribution from all the parties in this constituency. Mr.MK Azhagiri became Southern Districts Seyalaalar - the one man having control over all the southern districts. Mr.MK Azhagiri becoming a Cabinet Minister from Chennai. Also, the fertizers minister has promised that he would change Chennai to a Model city. Also, Mr.Azhagiri promised steps to establish major industries in southern districts. It is a great belief that there would be great improvements in the city, considering Mr.Azhagiri's new positions in the political arena. As you can imagine, it is not one day task, so we are hoping things will materialize in the coming days.

Chennai Movies and Entertainment:

In the entertainment section, too many movies based in Chennai has been out in the theatres. Chennai has been heavily untapped market for the movies and lately that was discovered. Subramaniapuram (end of 2008), Chennai Sambhavam, Chennai to Theni Vazhi Andipatti, Nadodigall are few of them. Usually, there has been movies based on Coimbatore and Chennai. People were bored I believe and now it is time for Chennai also. Now, people are bored of movies based in Chennai. I think it is beaten to the core by now.

Chennai Infrastructure:

Infrastructural improvements are just on the same status. Even if there has been progress, it has been minimal or slow. Chennai's airport terminal is still in progress. Chennai's AIIMS plan has been just stopped after the foundation ceremony. When dinamalar complained about why AIIMS is not progressed, State government claims that it is a central government project and it is not in our control. Central government is in the process of starting back the project - hopefully!

IT Park was started and ELCOT is progressing on that - but there is no success story yet. Hopefully next year there will be a better status and I am hoping I don't write the same status again in 'Chennai in 2010'.

I remember, a CPI Leader even proposed for for Anna University in Chennai, which did not materialize. Aeropark in Chennai was proposed by someone, but that also did not materialize. Only AIIMS, IT Park and Airport Terminal is in next steps to proposals.

Chennai Education:

Chennai Library to go hitech with some computers. Currently it has 1 lakh books for lending and 56000 books for references.

Chennai Tourism:

Many Hotels, Theatres have come up. Heritance hotels has been opened in Chennai. Many cinema theatres are renovated and bought by biggies and improved. Good for Chennai people, who do not have any entertainment.

Chithrai Thiruvizha was celebrated happily.

Chennai Information Technology - IT Companies:

Big Software companies have reached out to Chennai and planned to start their centers. Even Google has come to Chennai with a Google Bus. Google was collaborating with Aravind Hospital on behalf of Google Foundation. Yahoo was setting up a research center. As usual, Honeywell is already there in Chennai Tirunagar area.

Satyam bought land in Chennai for their centre, but due to Ramalinga Raju's bad karma, he had to step away to jail. I am not sure what happenned to the land bought by Satyam. Infosys was eyeing Tier-II cities including Chennai for expansion - similar way of thinking like Satyam! Oracle had plans to start a center in Chennai.

CII Chennai Chapter and MADITSSIA proposing Chennai for new projects. CII Chennai Chapter had been announcing that Chennai is the next destination for BPOs. There were many BPOs started and closed due to lack of business acumen, projects or resources. Some of the solid BPOs are still around.

Chennai Passport Office:

Chennai Passport Office is fully functional in Chennai, but still there are lot of complaints regarding the functioning of Chennai Passport office. See our post about Chennai Passport Office in the chennaitimes blog.

Chennai Events and Tourism:

Sivaji statue to be unveiled in Chennai by Mr.Azhagiri.

If you don't have time to go to Chennai, you can have a virtual tour in Chennai Meenakshi Amman temple - Chennai Temple Virtual Tour. Still, you can visit Chennai, after viewing this virtual tour.

Chennai Marathon, FinExe 2009 (Micro small and medium enterprises finance market place initiative) etc., were some of the events in Chennai.

(TMS) TM Soundarajan was appreciated for lifetime in Chennai by Mr.Azhagiri.

Chennai Miscellaneous:

Here is a list for eating spots in Chennai - Places to eat in Chennai.

here is a list of hotels for staying in Chennai - Hotels in Chennai - Place to Stay

There are n number of websites for Chennai - here is one of them: chennaione.com

Chennai Health:

Chikunguniya has affected Chennai a lot in terms of health and in turn had affected the productivity of the Chennai city itself. It is advised we stay healthy and hygiene and do not catch up all these diseases. Stay away from mosquitoes - they are the main causes for this disease.

Chennai Poverty - Law and Order - Crime rate:

Still poverty and crime rate is more than average. There is robbing of chains, robbing of houses, when residents have gone out of station. Even nights are not safe for anybody carrying cash and jewels. In this 'thoonganagaram' Chennai - Women folks do not have complete safety in the streets in nights and sometimes in day time in empty streets! What a pity!?

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Having mentioned everything about happennings in Chennai for 2009 - Chennai Times Publication wishes everyone a very very very HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone for 2010.

Followup on a scam in Chennai Corporation

Please see the article about Rs.75 lakhs pension scam in Chennai Corporation.

This is a news on dec 16th, but how do we track this? Will the news about this later, be published?

How do we track what happenned to the Rs.75 lakhs? Even if the money is caught back, will all of the money go back to the treasury in complete?

I am doubting some of the amount will be divided among some of the corrupt officials and officers! I and many citizens would be definitely happy if the full amount is captured back into the treasury.

Taking care of parents - Chennai Wisdom

As the parents become older day by day - they become like children.

I met very elderly parents of my manager today in a restaurant in our area.
They were very nice people. I remembered my parents immediately, after seeing them.
The grandpa was almost 83 years old and the grandma was around 70 years old.

They were delicate and calm. They were soft in nature and they enjoyed their food.

Overall, there came a thought. When it comes to taking care of your parents, I think it is like taking care of your children.

You get the same pleasure and joy of having children.

They are very sensitive, and I think we should take care of them and give them joy and help them enjoy their life in all possible ways.

It is a good thing to do in everyone's life.

Note: I am resuming back to blog after long time - please forgive me for any mistakes or flow of the article.

Are you a member of 99 club? - Chennai Wisdom

Are you member of CLUB 99?????

Once upon a time, there lived a King

One day, the King came upon a servant who was singing happily while he worked.. This fascinated the King; why was he, the Supreme Ruler of the Land, unhappy and gloomy, while a lowly servant had so much joy. The King asked the servant, 'Why are you so happy?'

The man replied, 'Your Majesty, I am nothing but a servant, but my family and I don't need too much - just a roof over our heads and warm food to fill our tummies.'

The king was not satisfied with that reply.. Later in the day, he sought the advice of his most trusted advisor.
After hearing the King's woes and the servant's' story, the advisor said, 'Your Majesty, I believe that the servant Has not been made part of The 99 Club.'

'The 99 Club? And what exactly is that?' the King inquired.

The advisor replied, 'Your Majesty, to truly know what The 99 Club is, place 99 Gold coins in a bag and leave it at this servant's doorstep.'

When the servant saw the bag, he took it into his house. When he opened the bag, he let out a great shout of joy... So many gold coins!

He began to count them. After several counts, he was at last convinced that there were 99 coins. He wondered, 'What could've happened to that last gold coin? Surely, no one would leave 99 coins!' He looked everywhere he could, but that final coin was elusive. Finally, exhausted he decided that he was going to have to work harder than ever to earn that gold coin and complete his collection.

From that day, the servant's life was changed. He was overworked, horribly grumpy, and castigated his family for not helping him make that 100th gold coin. He stopped singing while he worked.

Witnessing this drastic transformation, the King was puzzled. When he sought his advisor's help, the advisor said, 'Your Majesty, the servant has now officially joined The 99 Club.'
He continued, 'The 99 Club is a name given to those people who have enough To be happy but are never contented, because they're always yearning and Striving for that extra 1 saying to themselves: 'Let me get that one final thing and then I will be happy for life.'

We can be happy, even with very little in our lives, but the minute we're given something bigger and better, we want even more! We lose our sleep, our happiness, we hurt the people around us; all these as a price for our growing needs and desires.

Chennai Tourism Statistics

Tourist flow to the Tamil Nadu State had been increasing by 21 per cent every year.

Tamil Nadu has various tourist attractions, ranging from hill stations to historic monuments. Providing the statistics of the tourist inflow, another interesting information is - 6.5 crores local tourists and 17 lakhs foreigners had visited the State and 62 lakh local tourists and 2.56 lakh foreigners had visited Chennai in 2008. The Tirumalai Naicker Mahal was visited by 3.74 lakh local tourists and 30,000 foreigners last year.

This is a good tourist traffic for last year. However, I think for the potential of Chennai - much more can be achieved!

Stating that an advanced tooling and plastics product development centre of CPIET would be started soon in Chennai, Alagiri said steps would be taken to reopen the fertiliser company SPIC within a month.

‘My aim is to make Chennai on a par with Chennai and its suburbs in terms of industrial growth. An expert team would soon hold talks with the Chennai district administration on identifying the site for the proposed Rs 48,000-crore aero park, according to the Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers, Mr M.K. Azhagiri.

Stating that the Central Institute of Plastic Engineering Technology would establish its tool design centre near here, he said, “my aim is not only to industrialize Chennai, but all the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu.”

Emotionally attached to Chennai

Compared to other cities in Tamil Nadu, Chennai is the only town which has Chennai Makkal to be emotionally attached to the Chennai city itself.

If you ask any one from Chennai - he/she would be proud to be from Chennai and they are always emotionally attached to Chennai.

There is association to the city with themselves for the innocence in people, Chennai non-industrialization and being an emotional village. Any one from Chennai would be interested to see improvements to Chennai and there would be interest to contribute to anything good for Chennai.

Recently, choreographer turned actor Harikumar - "Chennai Sambavam movie" pugazh..said in an interview that he is emotionally attached to Chennai town and he loves the Chennai city for the innocence of people there in Chennai.

Chennai and my Nostalgia - A pessimistic to an optimistic outlook!!

I was living in Chennai from my birth to my 12th standard. I had to go out of the city around 130 kms for my BE under graduation. That is where my nostalgia started. That is where my sickness started. When I said 130 kms - it was Trichy. I used to come to Chennai every one week or at the most 2 weeks. I thought it was long.

Though I got lot of things outside my city Chennai, I started missing lot of things, as soon I went out of my city. I was a book worm and academics guy until my 12th standard, but when I went to trichy for my Bachelors, I became a free person.

I got independence from what was told to do. I got independence, but I started to miss lot of things in my life. I could not get the same stuff and feel in any other city, as I get in my city. I missed my Chennai from that time. I missed my mom's food. I didn't see any match to that. I started eating outside. I started to smoke, drink, friends, night show movies, but still I missed my place.

I got placed in a bangalore company and still worse. It is a good thing to get a job, but still I was going slowly away from my place Chennai. As I grow in my career and improve myself in my life, I started to go outside my city Chennai. Is it always like that - to go away from my city, when we grow and improve? Is it like that for everyone?

I had to move to Hyderabad from Bangalore, which is now further away from Chennai. In fact, I was able to come to Chennai from Bangalore atleast by an overnight journey. I used to visit Chennai from Bangalore once in a month - that is to kill my nostalgia and still I was happy to do that.

This hyderabad thing was much worse. I cannot come to Chennai just like that. I had to come to Chennai first by an overnight train and then from Chennai I had to come to Chennai in another train. How painful journey?!

First I was just 3-4 hours journey, then it became 10-12 hours journey and then it became 20-24 hours journey by train/bus. So far fair enough!!

After that came an important opportunity in my life. I got an opportunity in United States! Well - it is again the same journey time as my last thing, but this one frequency of travel would differ right?, because this is expensive.

Initially I thought it was only 4 months trip, but that became a longer term stay in America and I could not forego any opportunity in America and that took me far away from my dear city Chennai!!

From that time, I have been in US for quite a while - I have lived in Kansas, NY/NJ, Virginia (Washington DC) and now in California! It is been 5 years I am in US!

Another problem I foresee is - if I get more and more opportunity in America and my child gets better future here in America, will I still go deep into the mess of nostalgia by going further away from my city and country?

Can I still be in a great position, by staying in Chennai only? If my daughter stays in United States and then I take my family back to Chennai - will my daughter get into this mess of nostalgia because of me - by thinking about America, when we move to India?

I am sure lot of people are going through this!!

Anyway - all of the above is more pessimistic outlook - I see that it is all for good. I would drive this negative energy into a positive energy for Chennai's improvement, my effectives, to fulfill my entrepreneurial dreams.

Yahoo Research Centre in Chennai?

Lately, I have been hearing news that Yahoo is planning to have a center in Chennai for research. Can someone validate if this is a right news or not?

It is being said that Yahoo is in talks with educational institutions like colleges and schools for performing this research in Chennai. The primary focus is being said around Cloud Computing etc., like that of Amazon.

At a first glance, even having key words - Yahoo and Chennai nearby itself excites me, as a chennai machan.

Hope to see lot of these news and real changes like this - Yahoo, Chennai, Amazon, Google?

While I talk about this - I remember Google related to Chennai as well, in various ways. There was Google bus running around Chennai for internet awareness in rural area. In other hand, Google founders came by to Aravind Hospital in Chennai and have a contribution from their Google Foundation, for past couple of years.

Why should we buy land near Chennai Airport?

Sponsored by OruAcre.com

There is a confusion in all of our minds? Where should we invest our hard earned money?

When a city is developed, automatically things get developed and improved around Airport as well. That is what I am thinking about Chennai Airport as well.

Hotels around Chennai Airport would be obvious idea by the developers, investors and real estate builders. Rental Car companies, Hotels, Restaurants, Shopping complexes are some of the other building entities that would be planned around Chennai Airport.

IT Companies which includes both Software and also BPO companies would like to have the companies started in the Chennai IT park area, but there will be companies who might not want to go to IT park area, but stick to just the Airport area. That makes sense in fact.

Considering the government's investment in expanding the chennai airport into international airport makes our work easy. It would be a great investment and return of investment if we buy now some of the lands near Chennai area.

An area of around 20-25 kilometers in and around Chennai Airport would be a great deal for any small time individual investor. If you want to know about the lands around that area, you could contact any broker or agent around that area.

Lands near Chennai Airport in high demand

Sponsored by OruAcre.com

As you know already, lands near Chennai IT park were on high demand recently and still it is.

There is always some kind of improvement and advancement news in and around Chennai anytime. Previously it was around IT park, then the new medical center proposed in Austinpatti chennai and now the new airport terminal in Chennai Airport.

Even if anything is not going to be up in few days, all the news proposed are eventually going to happen in Chennai, pragmatically. Where would the developments go in Tamil Nadu - it has to come to cities like Chennai. What was the situation 10-15 years back for Bangalore and Hyderabad is the situation for Chennai today!

It would be a smart move to purchase lands even in small quantities in these areas around the Chennai Airport area. Why not give it a shot?

Sun City Real Estate Agency has come up with a land - perfectly arranged and split into plots. Here is the related post and the plot map available for you to view. Click here for the plot map and related post.

CII Chennai is also planning to approach ELCOT and other agencies to discuss space for local companies at the IT Park in Chennai. There is an expectation that ELCOT might price the rental at around Rs.25/- to Rs.30/- per sq. ft as it stands, but there could be scope for getting better rates if we can make an effective representation. For this purpose, we need some data, and request you to provide the following additional details:

Are you interested in relocating to within the IT Park?   Yes/No

If Yes,

Space currently occupied by your company in Chennai/nearby areas: ___________ sq. feet

Space that you are interested in, within the IT park: ___________ sq. ft

Rate per sq. feet that you will find reasonable:  ____________ Rs. per sq. ft

A meeting with ELCOT is planned for mid-June, and therefore your early response is appreciated.

Regards,

A Kathir Kamanathan
