Chennai Health - When was the last time you went for Doctor check up? - Diabetes Care Treatment Control

When was the last time you went for Doctor check up? When was the last time you did blood testing, urine testing and scanning?

It is advised by the medical community that every individual gets checked up from the age 30, every year. It is true fact and you can control lot of things, if you already come to know anything in your body.

I am only 31 years old and I came to know that I have high blood sugar in my body. I could not believe that and it was a surprise. That is how our health status is in!

One of the reasons is because of genetics - that is my parents have a history of diabetes etc., Another reason is my lifestyle - a software engineer's lifestyle. Enough money to eat outside, eat non-vegetarian most of the times - preferred dish would be non-veg against a vegetarian ones, sedentary lifestyle - no exercise and not even a necessary walking - since have vehicles everywhere. there is no reason for me to walk. Decent amount of stress.

These all lead to my health condition. As such Diabetes is not a disease, but it is a condition, which can be controlled and no problem - it cannot be cured, but it can be controlled with proper diet, exercise and medication, following the doctor consultation.

Aerobics in Chennai - Ladies Fitness and Gym

There is a good demand for Aerobics and Ladies Gym in Chennai.
So many have enquired about it to Chennai247.com.

So, here are some pointers -

Aerobics are a set of exercises that utilise maximum amount of oxygen. They step-up calorific demand and facilitate the break-down of stored fat cells. Researchers term such exercises as `cardiovascular training' because they strengthen the heart and improve overall health. Cardio works the largest muscle group in the human body, the thighs, and increases calorific expenditure. When a person extends cardio sessions beyond 20 minutes, the body realises that the energy coming from blood sugar and muscle glycogen (a by-product of water and carbohydrates stored in the muscle cells) is insufficient to offset the demands of the workout. Hence, it is forced to stop using the glycogen and breakdown fat cells. Cardio sessions trigger fat loss only if a person trains non-stop for 25 to 30 minutes.

Chennai Health is terrible as of Jan 10th 2010

I hear people are unhealthy in Chennai.

A total of 4000 outpatients were treated for "Dengue" fever at the government medical hospital in Chennai on Saturday and it was spreading rapidly in the district due to factors like water contamination, uncleared garbage and open drains.

hospital records showed that 30000 people had received treatment for "different types of fever, mainly chikungunya and dengue last year.

Action from Chennai Corporation, Chennai NGOs and Chennai people is needed for improving the health of Chennai. Hygienic lifestyle is needed among people of Chennai.
Chennai Corporation has to improve the quality of resources provided to Chennai people.

Chennai - Primary Health Centre - 100 deliveries in a month

I am not sure if this article is a joke or is this article serious enough!?

Click here - Article in The Hindu about the 100 deliveries in a month.

A Primary Health Center in Chennai has reached an important milestone of 100 deliveries in a month! I don't see an achievement here?!

Swine Flu - Chennai India

Even though Swine flew is not detected in Chennai and India, its always better to have precautions, so that it will not become an epidemic

SWINE FLU

What is swine flu?
Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that causes regular outbreaks in pigs.

Are there human infections with swine flu?
In late March and early April 2009, cases of human infection with swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses were first reported in Southern California and near San Antonio, Texas. Other U.S. states have reported cases of swine flu infection in humans and cases have been reported internationally as well.

Is this swine flu virus contagious?
Swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is contagious and is transmitting from human to human.

What are the signs and symptoms of swine flu in people?
The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

How does swine flu spread?
Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

How can someone with the flu infect someone else?
Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

What should I do to keep from getting the flu?
First and most important: wash your hands. Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Try not touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Are there medicines to treat swine flu?
Yes. CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir (NA) for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with these swine influenza viruses. When infected, antiviral drugs can make the illness milder and better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).

Precautions:

1. Cover your nose & mouth with a tissue when you sneeze or cough

2. Wash your hands with soap & water especially after you sneeze/cough

3. Avoid touching the eyes, nose & mouth of a patient

4. Stay away from school/work if infected

5. Contact the doctor if fever, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea occurs

My Chennai Father Part-II and my Health

My Chennai Father Part-II and my Health

Couple of Health Resolutions I have made this year.
A huge step - saying no to Alcohol, even to a small degree(even social drinking).
Preference to riding bicycle, instead of always using car.

This is going to drastically improve my health conditions.
Lesser vulnerability heart diseases. Self-motivated and less depression moments.
More fitness and normal weight for my body. Pumping my heart, periodically for good health!!

What I am doing is - My office is 1 mile from my apartment.
I go to office by bicycle in the morning, come back have lunch and then go back to office in the afternoon. By end of the day, I come back by bicycle in the evening. This gives me around 4-5 miles of exercise everyday. Even the commuting time is pretty much same as my car's considering the signal wait times and traffic. Isn't it worth?

While I ride my bicycle, I remember my father(dad).

Here is a first article I posted about my father - click here.

My grandfather used to walk all the way from his village Vadivelkarai or from Periyar Bus stand and come to our home in Chennai. My father used to go to work from TVS Nagar to Madura Coats (near Jail Rd, Chennai(near Arasaradi)). We are all spoilt people by using Car and not using bicycles.

My dad used to go this 12 km commute everyday and anywhere else he has to go, he still uses the same bicycle! Isn't it great? I guess, they use buses for other transport needs also. I feel happy and proud when I go by the same kind of bicycle and go to work for my family, apart from my health benefits!

I am also a good father, working for the family!!:)

Elderly People and Senior Citizen's productivity in Chennai

People wait for the age of 58 and retire from them work, once they are 58 or 60.
After that, senior citizens...

Privileges in train tickets; will have tax reduction and/or wherever they go they get advantage.

However, I believe there are much more things, which can be done by them. In foreign countries the elderly people and senior citizens are much more productive and independent in their life.

They generate money and produce something or other.

For example, McDonalds was founded and built by the Ray Kroc in his late 50s.
KFC(Kentucky Fried Chicken) was founded by Harland Sanders in his 60s.

Our senior citizens should try to be healthy and be productive than what they are doing right now, I believe.

The same advice goes to this generation also - in terms of health and productivity.

Youth's health!

I saw a neighbour today, who is about 35 years old.

He was limping a little bit, and I asked him - what happenned to your leg.
He said - yesterday he went for a walking.

Just for a walking his leg is in trouble. That is the situation of the health of the youth crowd! It is all because of lack of regular physical exercise of the human body.

People are becoming old sooner and I guess the death age is not 60s any more. It is probably lesser than that.

Take care guys!
