More Opportunities to be created in Chennai

Attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) is the way for developing Chennai. Investment of Rs 1,000-crore will bring additional 30 per cent investment in support services.

For that to happen, Chennai Airport needs to be an operating international airport, said Mr S.R. Nageswaran, Managing Director, ITCOT Consultancy and Services, Chennai, here recently.

Delivering the inaugural address of the Sourashtra Industrial and Trade Conference (SITCON) organised for the first time by Sourashtra Chamber of Commerce, he said Chennai began to develop only after attracting FDI in 1994 with Hyundai and Nokia setting up their plants. Infrastructure development needs to precede such a flow and stakeholders in Chennai should strive to get international status for Chennai Airport.
More opportunities

When such a thing happens, there will be more opportunities for local entrepreneurs, he added.

The Chamber should come out with a compact disc of who's who of the Sourashtra community, as Sourashtra entrepreneurs are spread across the world in different fields.

Catering business is doing good in Chennai

Day-before-yesterday, I and my mother wanted to order for food for around 40 people for a forthcoming family function. I chose Chennai Bypass road for the ordering the food.

I chose EMAR, Gowri Krishna and then my mom had "Uma Catering" in mind, which was just near Mappillai Vinayagar theatre, Kalavasal.

When I went to Gowri Krishna Veg Restaurant cum Hotel, the cashier cum manager was so busy that he was not able to take orders from me. I was thinking I am special, but I ended up realizing that he has so much business that I am not special at all. I am nothing for the amount of business he is doing. When I felt I am not treated properly, I moved out of the hotel.

I went to EMAR Veg Restaurant cum hotel, I was treat well and I was given a seat and I was given a print-out etc., I was happy and convinced. When asked about the rates, I was OK with the food etc., Now when I negotiated for transport, he did not give me a discount and he was so stubborn that he did not even come down from Rs.400 to Rs.300 for the transport. I was so frustrated for the stubbornness of that manager.

Next, I went to Uma Catering - the place was not looking decent and it looked like a lorry office! When asked, we were told that they will accept orders only for 50 people minimum. I was like - come-on...what the h*ll is going on!

Did they forget customer service or may be they are getting so much business that they don't care for negotiation??

At last, I told my mom come back and book one of them later in the days!!

I am glad as a well-wisher of Chennai that the businesses here are doing great in Chennai (especially FOOD business), but at the same time I am frustrated as a customer in Chennai!!

Rajshri Sugars sets up and upgrades Chennai Distillery Segments

Question on Rajshri Sugars cogen and distillery segments?

A: We are investing about Rs 320 crore over the next 18 months on adding distillery at our plant near Chennai. That will be a 80 KLPD distillery. We already run a 50 KLPD distillery near Chennai. We are also going ahead with two cogen plants, one in our Hyderabad plant and the other in our Chennai plant which needs to be upgraded.

So overall the future for Rajshri Sugars is very good because our cogen income itself and the distillery incomes will completely de-risk our fluctuations in the sugar sector.

Things have changed in terms of Chennai Transport

When I used to grow up in Chennai, there were buses for common folks and bicycle for other short distance trips. There were very few motorbikes and few cars.

Now, if we see everyone has ability to purchase motorbikes at least and people go around in their bikes. It has become too crowded, without much infrastructure improvement amidst people living inside growing too fast with their possessions.

Also given that the world's cheapest car Tata Nano is out released, there is lot of cars around as well.

It would be ideal to have improvement in the roads and bridges, which will really help in all the transport and for life and/or business of people in Chennai.

Not forgetting autos, share autos, taxis, lorries, carts etc.,

Government has to identify ways of improving business by facilitating businesses with various easy transports and transport infrastructures. Today, it is a nightmare for business folks, if they want to go from south chennai to north chennai, for business sake.

Believe - Anything is possible : Chennai Theme Parks

In "Sea World, San Diego", there is a great show called - "Believe - Anything is possible" in which Shamu, a killer whale performs whatever is instructed and asked for.

The theme of the show is that Believe and anything is possible. I believe the show has to be watched by everyone, to believe anything is possible in this world.

The trainers had set a relationship with the killer whales and had trained them to do certain things. It is pretty much as if an animal with 6 senses is performing whatever is instructed.

Training a dog, cat might not be a big deal, but training a killer whale is a big deal which can eat humans as well. The animal is so huge and the show was amazing. Believe and Anything is possible in this world.

While I was watching this show in the Shamu auditorium, I thought of a business idea in Chennai.

If you have good amount of money, then invest in a vast land in outskirts of Chennai. May be in couple of years, you can build a theme park or a recreational park, not exactly like Adisayam(water theme park), but you can choose some other theme for this park. How is this business idea in Chennai - may be long-term?

Family pressure for Entrepreneurs in Chennai

Parents say no to risks for Chennai Small Startups

Mr.X(name hidden for privacy) resigned his day job and plans to start a company of his own in Chennai.

X is a married man, with dependants including his wife, son, dad and mom.
When a young professional resigns his day job, takes risks - there is lot of oppositions and negative advocacy from all sides. Parents think from a conservative perspective and non-risky thinking of sticking to a job and getting salary and living a normal life.

It is good to have devil's advocate, when we are having an idea and we are going to execute the same. However, it is difficult to have all of them all the time. Those inputs has to be considered for improvement, but not to impediment any success steps.

If you have a brilliant idea, which you think will be a success in the market, considering your market research; if you have a business plan to execute the plan, which is reviewed by experts and they and you think that it is a good idea, if executed properly. Then nothing should stop you from executing this idea.

My friend X is going through this phase and he is starting a company of his own. I wish him success in his venture and "Made in Chennai" is backing up his business with funding.
