Invitation formality in Chennai

Based on our culture, we are always bonded with the relatives and friends. Even if you are not well bonded, you will be talked about good or bad.

If you have a function at your home, you will have to formally invite everyone. You will have to print the invitation very formally and include everyone's name. Otherwise, they will become angry. It is something like not giving respect.

If you are politically associated, you will have to please your leader. So, you will have to have big photos of your leader.

If you are bonded with lot of relatives, you will have to list all their names in it.

Also for invitation, you will have to go personally and invite everyone. For special people, you will have to give beetle leaves, supari and nuts. You might have to go as a family and give.

Sometimes these formalities are good and sometimes it is pain in the neck. Will this continue?

Beating the summer in Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Chennai, Erode, Salem, Tirunelveli and rest of Tamil Nadu

How to beat summer in the hot places in Tamil Nadu?

As you know as soon as you get out of your home (at least it is assumed that you have fan in house), it sweats a lot, head aches and your mouth gets dried. These are definitely symptoms of hot summer in our town. Even though it is torture in some ways, we can enjoy summer in lot many ways in our town.

In other hand, summers are usually enjoyed in foreign countries, but we think it as pain. But, never mind that is how it is.

Well, how to beat the summer heat and how to enjoy at the same time?

If you are in South Chennai, you can see lot of vendors lined up just near the Madura College and Tamil Nadu Poly technic college.

Sugarcane Juice vendors - they squeeze the lemon with the white sugar cane and give you with or without ice - and very sweet and cold Sugar cane juices. In fact, there are shops which provide more flavoured sugar cane juices.

Big big Watermelon has come out these days. The combination of Green, white and Red color with black spots in it. Awesome - when the vendor cuts it nicely and sprays salt and chilli powder and you eat with fork on the road - awesome taste:)

Next is as usual, Tender coconut - you ask for more water which is sweet and also say that you want Vazhukkai (that means not proper coconut, but a light layer of cocounut), that gives the taste to the tender coconut water as well. It is great. My daughter loves it! We do it as a family activity and we three love it - my wife, my daughter and I.

Apart from that you get fresh juice and bottled juice or soft drinks of course.

Do not read below - if you are less than or equal to 18 years old.

And at last, if you are alcohol lover, obviously you know what are the options you have;) Have B**r with green grapes in the mid summer and mid-day in an A/C room and then as a completion to the lunch you have a chicken/mutton biriyani. Isn't that a complete lunch;)? Just kidding - don't follow this unless you are an alcohol lover!

Does living outside Chennai in a foreign country give happiness?

Based on a recent research and survey by David Burdram, a socialist - it is found that immigrants into foreign countries are not as happy as we think.

It is always believed that people who travel out of their native place and live in a developed nation like America or UK (London) live very happily because they have all the money there. But, the reality and survey report says that money and luxury does not give all the happiness.

People who go out of their country live far away and be away from their home country, relatives, friends and their closed ones. This makes lesser happiness and more depression in fact.

The report is based on 1400 immigrants living in America and London. However, as a past immigrant I know how it feels and I completely agree with this report.

Do you agree as well (as an NRI)?

In Chennai - you need know someone in TOP to be successful

In Chennai, if you want to be successful - you need to

1) KNOW SOMEONE IN TOP OR
2) HAVE LOT OF MONEY AND/OR
3) HAVE LOT OF MAN POWER OR
4) BE SOMEONE IN TOP or

in someway identify yourself to be related to someone in TOP.
I am sure you understand what I am saying.

If you are an average individual, you have no power! You will be kicked out in every place or business you go to, in Chennai. I have personally experience in every place I went. Even the officers treat badly or atleast they won't provide you the service very easily, if you are a small person and nobody in Chennai.

I went to SBI Bank, ICICI bank, Indian Bank, Airtel office, BSNL office etc.,. Even tea shops, parotta shops, neighbours, police station, traffic police, cinema theatre, any queues or lines to get a service.

A treatment from a construction worker (say electrician etc.,) will be different, if you are somebody!!!

This is shocking, untasteful, but that is the truth! This is true almost anywhere in India - I believe. I am guessing that is not the case in big cities!!

Dependant or Inter-dependant Society: Chennai

This article is a follow-up to an article I wrote about a budding entrepreneur. Here is the previous post. Please read the previous post and then read the following...

Today, I called this Mr.X(Name hidden for privacy) and came to know that there is lot of family pressure, against his business ideas and entrepreneurship and risk-taking-attitude. His father-in-law and brother-in-law are opposing for his venture, instead they are expecting him to go for a job.

There is no independence for this guy! What is this? It is his life! He, his wife and his son is a family. How can somebody else interfere in his life? well...hold on... This is Chennai...Chennai is an inter-dependent and dependent society. This is not west, I understand that...However - there is too much control on one's life.

Why should this guy listen to his in-laws? I guess, that is how it is! In fact, in-laws will help, if there is a need and no one would come forward...

In today's modern culture, there is no joint family culture, however there is a virtual joint family culture still existing in Chennai. Even though physically members of the family don't stay together in a same house, still they are together virtually atleast in decisions and for happiness or sadness.

This inter-dependency definitely does not help at all for entrepreneurship!! Hope this changes/improves.

Jaathagam in Chennai: Moola Nakshathram

My wife's friend who lives in Chennai - is now of age 34 and she is not getting married due to some societal reasons. Do you know what is the reason?

Jaathagam - paazhaappona jaathagam. Looks like she has Moola Natchathiram. Moola Natchathiram is one kind of star, and it seems that not a great star.

If you have moola nathcathiram(moola star or moola Nakshthram), then there are so many restrictions for marriage. Moola star is not compatible with any star person, it seems. If you marry a moola star person, then your father would die - this is what astrologers say! Isn't it crazy?!

That is the reason, our friend is not getting any alliance for her marriage!!! It is like Tamil Comedy Actor Vivek says - "Aayiram periyaargall vandhaalum, ungallai thirutha mudiyaathu"!!!

Happy Family in Chennai

What do you need for a happy family?

1) Understanding spouse
2) Loving and caring spouse
3) Children
4) Satisfaction
5) Work to do for everyone in the family. At least one person as earning MONEY. Not necessary that another one also has to work to earn. But definitely something to do.
6) Savings is good.
7) Simple life.
8) Everyone likes you and your family. Being good to everyone - very difficult but possible.

The above is minimum. If you want to be more happy -

9) Wealthy - more money
10) Achievement in life - Success.

It is all my personal opinion.
If you think of anything more, please post it as comments.

Chennai Culture Analysis : Working women or housewife is good?

In today's expensive lifestyle, it is very difficult to live, save and prosper into a wealthy family just by one income. Life demands for both husband and wife to earn, spend and save.

When I was looking for my wife(arranged marriage), I had this debate inside myself for whether I have to choose working woman or a housewife. May be this analysis would help anybody in the same boat.

Let us analyze what are the advantages and disadvantages of a housewife for a family.

Advantages of working women over housewives.
1) More money into the family finance.
2) Busy mind, is productive. Idle mind is devil's workshop
3) Career for both husband and wife is in good shape.
4) If there is an emergency or worst cases, woman member of the family should be able to take over and balance the financial stability in the family.
5) Whole family is productive, in terms of work.

Advantages of housewife over working woman:
1) If one person is working outside and another is taking care of the family. That is the best thing for the family. All the households are taken care.
2) Kids are well taken care. Ask any working woman about their kids - they would feel bad and guilty for not taking care of them to the full extent - whatever age it is.
3) Happy family, with whatever money is available.
4) Relations are maintained.
5) Provided the family lives economically(of whatever income), a happy family.

Disclaimer: Please note these are my personal views and not intended to hurt anyone.

You wanted to know - what I chose?
At last, I was lucky(arranged marriage) to get a mix of both of them. May be that is the best option for anyone. Opinions differ...
