Old Plays (Vilayaattu) getting lost in Chennai and rest of tamil nadu

I remember in my child hood days, we used to play various games - about not just run around and play, but sit-and-play kind of plays.

Some of them to list are - Paramapadham, Chottan kallu, pallaan kuzhi etc., I could remember only few, but there are more I am sure.

Paramapadham is a game which has a chart or a map kind of sheet which is laid on the ground. Based on the dice's rotation and its number the coin is moved above in the chart. If there is a ladder, the coin climbs up. If there is a snake in the slot, then the coin comes down to the tail. Have you played this? Well, if you have played - you will realize how many of the children are playing today?

Chottan Kallu is played with few stones. It is again a sit and play play. The players throw a stone and catch bunch of stones etc., It is kind of tricky and nice to play - after you are skilled to do the same.

Pallaam Kuzhi is a game with a vessel which has 12 slots I think (correct me, if I am wrong). Tamarind seeds are filled in it and moved around. In fact, I am not able to recollect the game exactly.

Othayaa Rettayaa game is a game where you hide and ask a bunch of items in hand (usually tamarind seeds) and once the partner claims if it is othayaa rettayaa, then you declare and win or loose lot of tamarind seeds.

There are other plays outdoor, which are lost are - Kitti Pullu (Small stick and a longer stick), playing with marbles (Goli Kundu) and 7 Stones (Game played with seven stones).

Well, though I have covered a lot, I might have missed many. Hope this article took many of us back to the good olden days, when we spent childhood and never can be taken back.

NRIs going back to Native place some day? - Going to Chennai, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Coimbatore, Trichy one day

You might be working in Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai (anywhere in Middle east), Singapore or Malayasia, United States USA, United Kingdom UK or somewhere in Europe.

We all think that someday I will go back to your native place, which might be in and around Chennai, Sivakasi, Virudhunagar, Kovilpatti, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode etc.,

We keep thinking that someday I will go back to my native and settle down. Some expect for a IT job in the native place with sophistication of whatever you were availing in your migrated place. I think, for that you will have to wait for 40-50 years.

Though I was born in Chennai, I have lived in Trichy, I have lived in Bangalore. I have lived in Hyderabad. I have lived in Chennai. I have lived in different parts of United States. All of them bunch of years... At some point I came back to my native place. If I look for a job, suiting my same needs which I used to enjoy in the above migrated places, I will not be able to get even today.

Only route to come back to your home town and settle is to do business! Will you agree? If you don't agree, I can explain!!

Comparing your salary outside your home town, you won't get the same salary in your home town. It is going to be incomparably lowwww. The standard of living might not be same.

Only way to get satisfaction is to start a business of your own and provide employment to yourself and to others. That is the best thing you can do.

In other hand - the point I want to mention in this article is - even though NRIs want to come back to their home town, they cannot come back. Given their lifestyle in the migrated place, given their salary, given their adaptation to the life their, they cannot come back. This applies to both NRIs and also who migrated to other cities. This is a challenge in some ways to you. Will you be able to come back? If so, I will be the first person to be happy, but you will not be able to. If possible, come back - that is good for your city and also for the country.

I know many of friends, they like their home country and home city, but they will never be able to take their action. But, I think you should. However when you plan to come back to your city, plan appropriately. Do not land bad... Land safe and sound and planned - so that you don't crash without any plan. Plan appropriately, so that you can get the same lifestyle, even if you struggle for 1 or 2 years to get the same lifestyle.

Well, good luck guys!!

If you have any questions, let me know - I will be glad to answer - because I am going through!!

Does living outside Chennai in a foreign country give happiness?

Based on a recent research and survey by David Burdram, a socialist - it is found that immigrants into foreign countries are not as happy as we think.

It is always believed that people who travel out of their native place and live in a developed nation like America or UK (London) live very happily because they have all the money there. But, the reality and survey report says that money and luxury does not give all the happiness.

People who go out of their country live far away and be away from their home country, relatives, friends and their closed ones. This makes lesser happiness and more depression in fact.

The report is based on 1400 immigrants living in America and London. However, as a past immigrant I know how it feels and I completely agree with this report.

Do you agree as well (as an NRI)?

Non-resident Chennai-ites would always come back

I was talking to couple of my old Chennai friends.
Here is what I found -

All of them or most of them are coming back to Chennai. There is a strong feeling and attraction towards Chennai for everyone who were born and brought up there.

I know a friend who is in Ireland, there is a friend in Sivakasi, there is one in coimbatore, there is a friend in USA and also couple of friends from Chennai itself. They all seem to have one thing in common. They love Chennai. We all love Chennai, because we know it is heaven for the way it brought us all up.

This is sure to happen one day. All of the non-resident chennai-ites would come back to Chennai sooner. This might happen in a span of 3-5 years. It is expected that Chennai is going to be improved all at once, due to all cream people coming back to Chennai.

I see Chennai changing in 3-5 years to a far better extent.

My Chennai Brother

My Chennai Brother

While I was in the reminiscent mood, I thought of one more incident, which happenned when I was 5 years old and I was studying in first standard in a Big school in Chennai. My brother was studying second standard in the same school. His age was ofcourse 6(six). There was one guy in my class always disturbing me and torturing me. I was so pissed off. Remember I am 5 years old:).

I informed my brother about this and he had few friends. Remember - his age was 6 years. My brother - my chennai brother got frustrated and got together his friends in a lunch session. These lunch sessions in school are the real play time for many of us, if you remember your days. There will be two much running around by all boys and girls and no one would notice what is going on. That was the correct timing by my brother and his friends.

They got together and nailed and sketched "this guy(my classmate)" and brought him to a building wall. two guys caught this classmate and one guy kept punching at his stomach:). I keep on smiling when I think about this incident.

Lunch session was over. When I was in my first session, post lunch. My brother was called to my class and my class teacher was pinching my brother's stomach.:)

You see what has happenned? My brother is unfortunately caught and he is getting his punishment for what he did to help me:):)
Quite interesting!! I usually don't have a great memory and remember everything, bu this incident is fresh in my mind, even though it happenned at my age 5.

Rememering my Chennai Village Vadivelkarai - satti karugiya smell - Chennai Experience

While I was preparing dosa yesterday at my home kitchen, due to my vessel darkening(satti karugivittathu), I experienced a "satti karugiya smell" and I got remembered of Chennai and my sontha ooru Vadivelkarai.

My grandma gets excited when we visit the village. I am referring to "we", to my brother, cousin and myself. We go near the nearest railway tracks and do the required and get cleaned in a running water creek nearby - I am sure you know what I mean!! My Grandpa and us take bath in the lotus pond near this village(karuppu kovil) and come back to home to have nice tiffin(breakfast). The special breakfast items include panniyaaram, idly, dosa, idiyappam. All these are never equivalent in quality to what my mother makes, but definitely it has its own speciality of the rustiness and country side smell.

At this point, I smell all the "satti karugiya smell"!!:)

I love those days, where in we enjoy each and every moment and there are no responsibilities:)!
Even reminescence is FUN. I wish I close my eyes and get more remindings like this.
