When I used to grow up, there was very minimal influence of TV and we kids used to play together, talk to each other etc., It was healthy and good for our minds.
Even if we watch TV, we used to watch some english cartoons like Tom and Jerry etc.,
These days there is lot of influence from TV and seeing that kids just learn from the TVs a lot.
Our kids have started to talk like Vadivelu, which is not funny all the time to see if your kids are talking some local(gallege in tamil) language and like a low class fellow. For example - If your child calls someone 'Vendru', 'koyyala', 'kokka makkaa'. I don't want to mention here, but it is not great to watch your kid to talk cheap language. I really want my kid to talk in tamil and I would be glad to hear that but if the slang and text goes bad, I don't want to hear that or any body for that case they don't want their kid to talk like that.
Secondly, if you are talking about pure Tamil language - Chutti TV does that. But that is going to other extreme. Our kid say - "theeyasakthi vandhuttu irukku, oru aaivukkuzhu pottu, ethiriyai konnudalaam. Yei koiyyaala". Also, there is some violence in Cartoons and local madras language or local village language are heard day in and day out by our kids.
All said and done, I have an option of changing the channel or placing a child lock or switch off the TV or sell off the TV! Well, that can be done in some cases or few times, but still sometimes it is not in our control.
Technology sometimes helps people, but sometimes it is not good and it does not take our next generation in right direction or at least I hate to see my kids to see crazy cartoons.
Why don't they just keep the cartoon programs in English if the original is Tamil? I am for Tamil all the time, but this is not the way our kids learn Tamil and they should learn "good tamil"!!

Chennai Children's Play
When I and my brother used to play in the streets of Chennai - it was called Murugan Koil Street and we used to have some wooden cricket bat. Also, after those rubber balls, we got cricket balls in red color, which were used ones. Cricket balls are made of cork and covered by hard cloth stitched with white threads.
Sometimes when our ball drops into the drainage, we just take it and wash it and use it. By the way I am referring only to rubber balls.
I am thinking now - when I use a tissue or any item we use we throw it into trash as soon a we use it.
I remember - there was only use-and-throw pen, when I remember about use-and-throw items. Today, there are very less items we reuse.

Reading habit for kids
Reading habit for kids
I believe - If we implant the reading habit in kids, then their life is set.
As Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam had said sometime back - Good Reading leads to good thoughts; thoughts leads to actions; actions lead to habit and habit leads to character. The whole good character could be built by a reading habit.
My mother always brought books from the local library and had advocated us to read in my school days. I realized the power of reading habit only in my college days, in fact. I want my children to have them incorporated as early as possible, like my mother dreamt about us.
First of all, we need to be a good model character for them. We should not be the person who just watches movies and TV whole time. The children should see us reading magazines and good books. They will automatically follow us, because they don't have anybody to follow in the initial stages. I am sure once they read more books they will form their own characters by following great men.
Take them to the library, when they are just 1 or 1.5 year old itself. Or 2 years is a good enough age, when they understand things better. They will see all the people reading silently and assume that it is a good habit to do and they start liking too.
Do not push the reading and as always let reading be FUN for them!
As my parents invested on education for us, and nothing else, I will take my children's education as a high priority.
If we are keen in just earning and building wealth, it is not good enough. We need to invest time on kids to encourage them and appreciate them, recognize them for their work and their thinking.
Use Recognition...recognition as the Carrots for their improvement and their happiness!
