Is Chennai Alanganallur Jallikattu a good sport still?

As a pure Chennaiite and being from Tamil Nadu, I always like about this sport for its roots back to the old traditional sport. Yes - I am talking about Jallikattu sport in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. This Jallikattu sport has been there for more than thousands of years ago.

Another blog-mate has written an article about Jallikattu, which gives the blogger's experience about Jallikattu. That is true, even many average Chennaiite might not have seen Jallikattu in Alanganallur.

I have seen personally only once in Alanganallur inside the village. It was an awesome and scary experience. Also, my chennai brother has written about our experience previously.

The point I am getting to is related to the video from NDTV. Media is all over being against Jallikattu and trying to stop this sport. I know this Jallikattu sport angers lot of Animal Lovers.

There are many foreigners coming to Chennai to view this sport. There is good revenue out of this sport to this village and to Chennai, Tamil Nadu and to India.

On top of all these, this is a very old tradition being continued and being practised for thousands of years. These are some of the actions which will take away the real flavour of Chennai. Do we want to loose the tradition of Chennai?

Every sport is dangerous and risky - do we stop playing those? There are even more adventurous and dangerous sports than this. Do we stop those sports? We still play those right?

I know one or two persons get killed and 30 or so people get injured. We cannot stop the sport for that. In fact, these days for getting the prize in this game has been eased out. If you hang with the bull in the bull fight, that is good enough. You don't have to completely bring down the bull.

Still it is being played in some parts of Spain and Mexico. Do they stop it? Some developed countries are still following adventurous sports and following tradition. Why do we go away from our tradition and adapt to western culture! Let us stick to our originality, we can reach top!!

Please do not stop this sport and that means you are taking away the flavor of Chennai and its tradition. I am thinking stopping/banning Jallikattu sport is equivalent to the fact of bringing down Chennai Meenakshi Temple, thinking that you can use the space in a better way in the centre of the town. Would you agree for that?

Pongal festival: Famous festival in and around Chennai

This is Chennai Mani. I will be a special reporter for "Chennai Times" from now on.
We are aiming to take Chennai Times Publication to the next level by end of 2009...

PONGAL FESTIVAL:::

Pongal is one of the major festivals in Tamilnadu, which is popularly called as Sankaranthi in other parts of India. It is also the birth of a new tamil month ('thai'). Now this day has been considered as the Tamil new year day by the government of tamilnadu also.

As this day is nearing by with only hardly a month, let me share some things about this day which I know.On Pongal day, the people used to wear new clothes and this day is mainly for the cattle and machinery used for cultivation. So farmers mainly celebrate this day by presenting the cultivated goods and presenting to the Sun god. The village people normally celebrate this day by decorating their houses, fields and cattle. They would expect this day as auspicious day as they would have harvested their crops and this should continue throughout their life time. The main food items for this day would be Sweet pongal (ingredients may depend on the financial status of the family).

Other things include the Sugarcane which is purple in color and the Lunch made of fully homegrown vegetables. Root vegetables like potato varieties is also included in the menu.On the next day of Pongal, people used to have non-vegetarian and the next day is the day of Mattu Pongal. This day is mainly for the cattle. On this day they will take care of their cattle specially by decorating and giving special food. Moreover on this day cattle will be sent for Jallikattu also - which is a popular brave sport.

I would like to share some of my experiences during pongal day.We used to wait for this day as we can chew sugarcane on this day. Normally I would love to eat sugarcane a lot. Then about the Lunch in our home it will be heavy with full of vegetables. All vegetables will be there in the Sambar and for side dish we would have potatoes, pachcha mochai and beans usili. Dinner will be completed with dosa and the remaining Sambar. This sambar will be in our home for another two days. :-)

Great festival! But now I am away from my home, missing all the above. Though I am with my family here, I am missing a lot without my parents who are there in my home town. I dont know whether I am having any plan to go to my home town on this day, but I am hoping to do so.
