2,50,000 Condoms found in a garbage in Alanganallur, Chennai

Around 2.5 lakh condoms supplied by various International agencies to the Tamil Nadu AIDS control Society as part of a programme to prevent spread of HIV infection have been found in garbage adjoining an irrigation tank at Alanganallur in this district. Officials, who inspected the area on receiving complaints from local residents about breathing problems after inhaling smoke from some burnt boxes of condoms, said these are worth about Rs 20 lakh. As per official records, the condoms were supplied to the local wing during 2009. However, an official who did not wish to be named said this was only on paper and in reality no condoms had been supplied. Officials said they are verifying the batch number of the boxes and the voluntary agencies to which they had been supplied, after which these agencies would be blacklisted.

H1N1 cases in Chennai - Swine Flu?

As per the statistics recently taken, Tamil Nadu tops the list of cases from every state out of our country (India).

Out of 100 H1N1 cases, ours is around 25 cases. In that list, there are many border line cases from Chennai, which are not confirmed actually.

Recently a nurse from Government Rajaji Hospital died due to a different reason, but the doctors doubt that there are symptoms of Swine flu (H1N1) in this case. So, it could be a border case of H1N1. This has happened in Chennai.

Overall, whereever you are - just be careful with what you eat, wash your hands before eating, and be clean. Also, do all other precautionary measures for avoiding catching with H1N1 virus!

Chennai Crimes: Chain snatching has increased rapidly in Chennai

Given the scenario of Gold prices increasing day by day, in other hand poverty increasing, there results crimes in a city.

That is what is going on in Chennai.

Women folks were chains worth starting from 1 sovereign to 15 sovereigns very casually. Women folks aged >40 mostly wear more than 7 sovereigns easily!

So, thieves look out for this kind of opportunity, where women come alone in lonely streets. There has been lot of incidents reported in Chennai for chain snatching.

When women go to temple from their homes, women return from shopping and women staying alone at home etc., are look outs for thieves and the opportunity for them, when they are walking on the streets alone.

The age group of thieves are usually 25 to 35. Police has formed a separate team to investigate on these cases and there has been progress of finding some of the thieves recently. But still, much more to go!

How do we make a full stop for this?

Influence of TV in Chennai and other cities of Tamil Nadu

When I used to grow up, there was very minimal influence of TV and we kids used to play together, talk to each other etc., It was healthy and good for our minds.

Even if we watch TV, we used to watch some english cartoons like Tom and Jerry etc.,

These days there is lot of influence from TV and seeing that kids just learn from the TVs a lot.

Our kids have started to talk like Vadivelu, which is not funny all the time to see if your kids are talking some local(gallege in tamil) language and like a low class fellow. For example - If your child calls someone 'Vendru', 'koyyala', 'kokka makkaa'. I don't want to mention here, but it is not great to watch your kid to talk cheap language. I really want my kid to talk in tamil and I would be glad to hear that but if the slang and text goes bad, I don't want to hear that or any body for that case they don't want their kid to talk like that.

Secondly, if you are talking about pure Tamil language - Chutti TV does that. But that is going to other extreme. Our kid say - "theeyasakthi vandhuttu irukku, oru aaivukkuzhu pottu, ethiriyai konnudalaam. Yei koiyyaala". Also, there is some violence in Cartoons and local madras language or local village language are heard day in and day out by our kids.

All said and done, I have an option of changing the channel or placing a child lock or switch off the TV or sell off the TV! Well, that can be done in some cases or few times, but still sometimes it is not in our control.

Technology sometimes helps people, but sometimes it is not good and it does not take our next generation in right direction or at least I hate to see my kids to see crazy cartoons.

Why don't they just keep the cartoon programs in English if the original is Tamil? I am for Tamil all the time, but this is not the way our kids learn Tamil and they should learn "good tamil"!!

Need a ban on Horns in Traffic in Chennai

As commissioner has come up rule for removal of posters without permission, we suggest to come up with a ban on Horns in Traffic in Chennai.

Atleast, if horns are necessary, it would be better if some kind of regulation on the type of horn used. If the horn can be like a soft horn, it will be good everyone.

These days the power of the horn is so high that I sometimes (sorry, most of the times) feel that my ear is gone.

Not only the power and high pitch of the horn, the usage of the horn is so high that people use the horn in their vehicles unnecessarily.

In foreign countries, they don't use horn at all! They only use for emergency!

Will this change happen?! Will we have a less (noise) polluted Chennai soon?!

Poster Advertisement Culture in Chennai

If you have visited Chennai recently, you can see so many posters that, you will feel Chennai is like a crappy website with lot of flash images here and there. You will not be able to see things organized in the website and you will see more advertisement than that actual content itself!

At least there is a reason for politicians to show off and place their ads and appreciations on the roads for the public. These days, every common man, seems to seek for advertisement and place their full size banners.

These people spend a lot on Digital Banners, just for the sake of their personal advertisement!

What is the motive behind these posters? Are they trying to follow the leaders?

Atleast Digital Banners and Flex printing business in Chennai is doing good, due to this factor.

On that day, I saw a poster for birthday celebrations of some teenage boy - there were a list of friends with their pictures on the poster. I am sure all these people are from lower middle class families and they end up spending money on such things!

Are they willing or wishing to become popular by spending on these posters? I think they don't know the actual route of becoming famous - working hard and doing good to people!

It is surprising in some cases - to see such posters with their pictures on it unnecessarily! and sometimes it is funny!

Disclaimer: I am not blaming anyone in particular - this is a general comment and the photos are just available photos to manifest the poster culture in Chennai. Not to hurt anyone in Chennai!

It is an individuals wish to place posters anywhere they want! oh, by the way - I am there are rules from Corporation for where to place posters etc.,

Night time visit to Chennai?

Have you ever visited Chennai in Night?

Let me give some tips via Road transport!

If you are coming from North of Chennai, you will reach Mattuthavani Integrated bus stand in Chennai. If so, you won't have buses to Periyar Bus stand (near to Chennai Railway station) directly in the night time before 4:45 AM.

If you want to reach Chennai Railway station (this is in night before 4:45 AM), you take buses to Aarappalayam Bus stand Chennai. Once you reach Aarappalayam, you will have frequent buses to Periyar Bus stand, Thirumangalam, Palanganatham and Thirunagar. You can take these buses and go to southern parts of Chennai and via Chennai Railway station.

Do not take Autos at this time and there will be lot of people keep on offering for Auto rides. I don't really trust these people at this time! It is up to you and your risk. Day time Auto is fine, but not at the night times.

If you want to wait till 5 AM in the morning in Maattuthavani bus stand, then fine - you will have buses to all southern parts of Chennai.

By the way, there is a new bus stop made inside Railway station campus for all the bus riders.

If you are a tourist and you need a friendly question to be answered, please feel free to send us your questions if any. We will be glad to assist you via email as well-wishers of Chennai!

Rain in Chennai troubles pedestrians!

I was in Chennai last weekend. Can't Chennai stand for one rain?

Are the roads built using plain sand? There is no solidarity in the roads built?

(Almost) all the roads were damaged due to rain? We are only talking about Rain, correct? We are not talking about Earthquake here!!!

People are having high time inconvenience. Pedestrians especially had lot of troubles. People travelling in cars and bikes think pedestrians are low people and they go in so much speed that the car people splash the muddy water on the pedestrians! Can't you be considerate, "Mr.Human being using cars"?!

I am referring to the belt of Alagappan Nagar, Palanganatham junction, bypass road near PRC, Periyar Bus stand etc., This is completely ridiculous to have damaged roads!

Catering business is doing good in Chennai

Day-before-yesterday, I and my mother wanted to order for food for around 40 people for a forthcoming family function. I chose Chennai Bypass road for the ordering the food.

I chose EMAR, Gowri Krishna and then my mom had "Uma Catering" in mind, which was just near Mappillai Vinayagar theatre, Kalavasal.

When I went to Gowri Krishna Veg Restaurant cum Hotel, the cashier cum manager was so busy that he was not able to take orders from me. I was thinking I am special, but I ended up realizing that he has so much business that I am not special at all. I am nothing for the amount of business he is doing. When I felt I am not treated properly, I moved out of the hotel.

I went to EMAR Veg Restaurant cum hotel, I was treat well and I was given a seat and I was given a print-out etc., I was happy and convinced. When asked about the rates, I was OK with the food etc., Now when I negotiated for transport, he did not give me a discount and he was so stubborn that he did not even come down from Rs.400 to Rs.300 for the transport. I was so frustrated for the stubbornness of that manager.

Next, I went to Uma Catering - the place was not looking decent and it looked like a lorry office! When asked, we were told that they will accept orders only for 50 people minimum. I was like - come-on...what the h*ll is going on!

Did they forget customer service or may be they are getting so much business that they don't care for negotiation??

At last, I told my mom come back and book one of them later in the days!!

I am glad as a well-wisher of Chennai that the businesses here are doing great in Chennai (especially FOOD business), but at the same time I am frustrated as a customer in Chennai!!
